FRONT, was a free youth project staging a creative takeover of an empty shopfront in the heart of Perth’s CBD presented through FORM’s Scribblers Festival and Propel Youth Arts.
Over three weekends during June 2023, groups of 12 to 26 year olds collaborated with sculptors, poets, muralists and multidisciplinary artists on installations and activations aimed at helping foster a sense of wellbeing and connection to the urban environment. Passers-by can witness and interact with the evolving installations and outcomes in real-time, adding to the texture and atmosphere of the CBD experience.
FRONT was open to all for wandering, creating & relaxing 10-4pm each weekend. With creative workshops happening for young people.
I was lucky enough to be involved in this project and created a hanging installation made completely from paper.
Taking inspiration from my love of diving this project was aimed at creating awareness of the ongoing problem with SOME in the recreational fishing community abusing sharks for social media photos or to attract bigger sharks. Ammo Jetty is a popular local diving, fishing and swimming site that has been a key site for these abuses. As a regular diver there, I have seen first-hand the brutality against juvenile sharks. The killing of sharks has dire consequences for the marine environment as they are apex predators and they are critical to our underwater ecosystems.
Myself and Carrissa Wu took over FRONT with an immersive paper-crafted world for the first weekend through the theme of Bringing Nature into the City.
