Martu Story Time

Through Kaitlyn’s role with the Shire of East Pilbara I had the opportunity to collaborate with sisters Lynne and Tracey Charles to deliver Martu Story Time in East Newman and Jigalong during NAIDOC Week. The two sessions demonstrated community development outcomes linked into Emily Style’s inclusive curriculum framework with children needing to see themselves (mirrors) and the State Library of WA’s Better Beginnings Program designed to role model positive parenting through the importance of reading, singing and interacting with young children.

The East Newman session was held at Martu Hostel and collaborated with staff from PAM’s, 54 Reasons, Advocare and HOPE. Who were invited to attend to connect with family members and share what their services offered. The books selected by Lynne and Tracey were Indigenous authors and delivered in a mix of Martu and English. This made them more accessible for both children and mothers who attended. For example, we sang There was a Martu who had a Jarntu (dog) and Dingo was his name O. We also changed animals in the stories to reflect the local Pilbara Fauna. In the lead up to sessions, Kaitlyn reached out to the State Library Better Beginnings staff who generously donated books and magnets for those who attended the sessions. Both Lynne and Tracey were also mindful to role model to the adults, that even if they are illiterate they could still make up a story by looking at the pictures. The sisters were mentored to deliver sessions independently.
